Lycoris Linux
Not only do the newest bugfixes from Microsoft there, but a Linux distribution also comes from Redmond. The
differences to other distributions will be detailed here. Hopefully you will find this overview of Lycoris Linux
helpful.
User friendliness
'Linux is for
everyone' is the Redmonders' motto. This is reflected by a strongly simplified KDE 2.2.2 and
a perfectly easy installation.Lycoris has packed all up to date applications for daily use onto just one CD which is installed in 30 minutes. A nice little gimmick is, that you can play solitaire during the installation.
After the installation the computer does not need to be rebooted but you are asked for your user information to be able to log in.
But Lycoris has also stinted - with components. To achieve high user friendliness and not to scare the new user with dozens of applications there is mostly just one application for each purpose. The default browser is Mozilla. For updates you need the update assistant that was developed by Lycoris.
Multimedia
Do you like watching DivX or DVDs? Or what about music?
XINE satisfies the desire for movies in
(nearly) all formats. XMMS plays your MP3 files. For editing graphics, Lycoris provides GIMP - as nearly all distributions do. Furthermore Lycoris' distribution is made for performance. Kernel 2.4.2 provides the final cut.
Interoperability
They even thought of users who are changing from Windows. Wine is already installed and configured.
So you just have to click the desired program icon. FTP-, web- or SQL servers were completely
waived to increase booting time. On the screenshot you can see Excel97. Just after the
installation of Linux and Excel, it could be used without any further
configuration.Community
If you ever despair of a problem you can ask other users at www.lycoris.org. You'll find that the users-help-users-system will prove very useful.Summary
Lycoris brings "Linux to the Desktop". Until today I have not been able to find any errors. The small size leads to clarity. It is especially suitable for use with a dual boot system. For me, and hopefully you, it is the perfect gateway to the world of Linux.Talkback Area
