GnomeMeeting

Do you know Microsoft's NetMeeting? Then you also know GnomeMeeting.
Don't you? Then you should absolutely read this tutorial to be able to make phone calls with your Linux PC.
This report will accompany you from the installation to the configuration and your first call. You should not need any previous knowledge.

System requirements

First of all you must download the GnomeMeeting package. You can get it from the project page. Now you should check, if the package OpenH.232 is installed.
This package contains all necessary files to be able to use the H.232 protocol. This protocol ist the standard protocol for internet telephony.
Additionally GnomeMeeting needs the package pwlib. Don't know what it does but GnomeMeeting needs it :)

Installation

Preferably you should go to the console and change to the directory where you have saved the packages. You must be root to be able to install the packages. So enter the command su and type your password. Now you are logged in as "root" and have his permissions.
In order to install the packages you must execute the program rpm. You have to enter the program you wish to install as a parameter. Execute the program in the following form: rpm -ivh FILE

After about 2 minutes you should have installed GnomeMeeting. You can now start it by typing gnomemeeting.

Configuration

Now you have to adjust GnomeMeeting to your preferences. In order to do that, click on the preferences and enter the wanted values. The only page that should be explained is the one for entering the /dev files.
You should see this window on your screen:

The entered values are suitable for 99,9 percent of all PCs, when no second soundcard is installed. Do you own a webcam or a TV card and want to transmit the images by it? Then you must enter /dev/video0 as video device.

Making a phone call

Making a phone call becomes very easy now. To call a person, you need the IP address. If you just want to test your preferences and your connection you can use an ILS server and call somebody. The called one will understand this test because his preferences will also be tested.

The user view

In the end

Now you can call all NetMeeting and GnomeMeeting users with internet pricing! Additionally you can use the service at web.de for connecting to the German telephone net. If you experience any problems with that, please send me an email and I will explain it in detail.

Although GnomeMeeting is very popular because of its compatibility with NetMeeting, there are several other conferencing applications for Linux, that should be mentioned in this context.

  • Robust Audio Tool
or abbreviated "RAT" is especially suitable for heterogenous networks because it supports many platforms:
FreeBSD, HP-UX, IRIX, Linux, NetBSD, Solaris, SunOS und Windows 95/NT.

  • VIC
The video conferencing software VIC supports all recording devices of the Video4Linux project. Additionally, pictures of a X11 session can be transferred.

This application is useable on several platforms, too:
Solaris, SunOS4, Irix 6.2, Linux, FreeBSD und Windows.

  • Gnome-o-Phone
A very simple Gnome program for speech transmission to one opposition.

  • phone
This Linux console application provides a connection to a central server, by which other persons that are online with activated "phone" can be found. Because of that you do not have to make a date for talking with the help of another protocol like ICQ.

  • Nautlius
provides encrypted speech transmission between two partners. However, this program's development has been stuck for a longer time.

Furthermore you can find a great number of voice-over-ip projects on the internet that are not developed any more but perhaps can be a good starting point for one's own projects:
