LinPopUp
LinPopUp is the
name of the Linux version of WinPopUp, a small tool which sends
and receives short messages inside a WINDOWS network.
If you use a Linux computer inside a WINDOWS network, you feel alone and disconnected because you are not able to use NetMeeting or WinPopUp. LinPopUp, coded by Jean-Marc Jaquet, provides a Linux replacement for WinPopUp.
The program functions like the WINDOWS version but looks much better.
A working Samba
server on the Linux computer is necessary for using LinPopUp.
Because of better security and comparability, samba 2.0 or higher
is recommended. You must add the following entry into the samba
configuration file smb.conf in the part [global].
| File /usr/local/samba/lib/smb.conf or /etc/smb.conf |
[global] message command = /usr/local/bin/LinPopUp "%f" "%m" %s; rm %s ; Add this to the other settings in [global] |
To receive mail it is not
necessary to keep LinPopUp running, unlike the WINDOWS version.
Plus, if you are not logged in you still receive your mail.
It is recommended that you start the
program automatically along with your window manager if you want
to be informed about new messages at once. To keep your virtual
desktop free you should add the option -min to your call and LinPopUp starts
iconified. If you have received messages, the window would open
automatically.
The program is available at http://www.littleigloo.org/ .
